Lauren's Story
When I first decided to volunteer
at Fast Friends what I really looked forward to was being able to spend
time with the dogs. I had no idea of how poorly the greyhounds were
treated at the racetrack. Hearing this only increased my willingness to
volunteer. For me, the best thing about Fast Friends is not only
spending time with the dogs, but watching them grow, become more used to
people, and happier in general.
Care's Story
I found out about Fastfriends Greyhound Rescue shortly after Franklin Pierce students got involved as volunteers there because my roommate was the Franklin Pierce Student Coordinator for this program. I was working at Petco grooming dogs and my roommate asked if I would be willing to volunteer once in awhile to help groom the greyhounds, or even just spend time socializing with them.
I went to check it out, and I loved it! I started bringing other volunteers with me and they all agreed that once you motivate yourself to go the first time, you're hooked and can’t stay away. I started to go more frequently and the dogs became acquainted with me. Eventually they trusted me and even looked forward to my visit.
I can not explain in words how great it feels to walk in the door and see their excited faces and wagging tails and hear them whine with the anticipation of hanging out with you! Nor can I put into words the feeling you get when you know you’ve had a hand in getting a dog adopted. My favorite greyhound is Emily; she recently got adopted. She is extremely
cute but no one wanted to adopt her; she was at the kennel for a very long time. The reason was that she was very shy. She would quiver in fear every time a stranger came near her and it took a VERY long time for her to trust someone. Having so many volunteers last semester caused her to loosen up her fear of strangers!! A couple came in to look at her and she showed no fear. They fell in love with her and adopted her.
I will miss her very much but it feels good to know that we helped her get a home.
Honey's new family.
Looks to us like she already has some kinfolk in her new home!
