Students put final touches on snowboarding club

Winter is a season filled with Christmas parties, family gatherings, festive sweaters and snow. As snow falls, snow sports become an option for college students, something that sophomore roommates Dylan Kiely and Sean Doherty are excited about. The two have started a snowboarding club for the riders on campus. While it is not an official club yet, the two roommates are finishing the paperwork to get the activities underway.

The intention of the group is to bring FPC’s snowboarders together and to have other riders to interact with. With almost 50 members, Kiely knows that snowboarding is an interest on campus and hopes to build on that. "We wanted to group all of the snowboarders on campus to bring everyone together so we can make snowboarding a big thing at FPC." An initial concept of the club was that riders on campus could communicate with each other and help with carpools to mountains in the area or information about local riding areas.

The future of the club looks bright with the response Kiely has received from the campus. The first meeting of the year had just over 30 members in attendance and the founding members hope to see the number grow with each snowfall. In coming months, the group hopes to have the support of the college and will try to receive group discounts from some of the surrounding skiing and riding areas and have other ideas for incoming funds. "We are going to raise money so that we can plan big trips to mountains, but it will mainly be used for buying equipment for on campus use" said Kiely. As more snow falls and more riding opportunities arise the club will have video and photography sessions as a part of their activities, and eventually have enough footage to make full length snowboarding films, which may or may not be used for fund raising purposes.

The snowboarding club at FPC will provide another on campus activity for students, but more importantly for Kiely will bring riders together for a common cause. "What I am going to like most about the club is that I get to meet, ride, and talk about snowboarding with new people and share information on snowboarding and its culture."
