Arab
Anger
--Americans and Europeans take pride in their freedoms of
speech. But in many Arab countries, those freedoms of speech have
sparked violent anti-Western protests. Ever since a Danish cartoon
depicting the prophet Muhammed was published in newspapers around
the world, angry Muslims in Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have
rioted in the streets. Even though the mainstream US media have not
published the drawing, Americans have been a target of much of the
violence. In Afghanistan, a United States Military base was attacked
by protestors—leaving four people dead after police fired into the
angry crowd. In the US, some internet sites and college newspapers
have published the cartoon, which has caused controversy over the
limits of free speech. Read on to see how the debate over free
speech rights is playing out on the global stage.

Radio Reaches Iraq
--Every day, Americans consume news stories about blood shed and
bombings in Iraq. But the mayhem in the country is hard to
imagine for many people. Unless we were to travel to Iraq, how
would we know what life is really like there? Well, students at
Swarthmore College have been trying to find out. A growing
program called "War News Radio" is becoming a popular and
informative way for students to get the whole picture of life in
Iraq. Instead of simply repeating common stories about the
conflict and occupation, Students have taken it upon themselves
to contact actual residents of Iraq and examine the realities
for people in the country. This is a great chance for college
students to understand the complicated politics and social
construct of the war-torn nation. Check this story
out to see what you can learn from the work of these savvy
college students.
