Piercing exhibit opens March 1st

by Jimi Devine

Franklin Pierce photography professor Elsa Voelcker has recently put the finishing touches on her show titled “Piercing Images: The Body as a Canvas,” which will be presented in the Thoreau gallery beginning March first.

The show will consist of 30 prints from Voelckler’s portfolio on body piercing. “People of all ages are getting pierced, not just college kids,” said Voelcker.

Throughout her portfolio she expresses this diversity through the various models that range from all ages, including an 11 year old boy and an 83 year old man. All of the participants who got their pictures taken received one dollar to validate their model contracts, and Voeckler spent much of the winter break making a 8 x 11 print for each participant.

Voelckler has been working on her portfolio over the past two years. After visiting piercing parlors in Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire she began photographing people with piercings. She has spent up to seven hours at a convention shooting one day. She has also spent a large amount of time in her darkroom, developing film and making prints.

“Piercings are mostly erotic, sexual things, and I don’t think this generation knows that,” Voelcker said. At first, something about piercing revolted her until she witnessed her daughter get a piercing and her attitude changed. “In my research I found piercing to be addictive according to many,” she said.

In addition to her photography show, a documentary will be presented which was produced by Tara Marval.

Prints from the show will be sold for $400, $250 for framed fiber based prints, and mounted prints will be available for $100.
