Shortstop Olson Reaches 200 Hit Mark
by Andrew Van Ness
Exchange Staff Writer

Franklin Pierce shortstop Garrett Olson reached 200 career hits in a win against Southern New Hampshire University Saturday afternoon.

The historic hit came against Southern New Hampshire pitcher Casey O'Brien with one out in the bottom of the first inning in the first game of a doubleheader.  Once the home crowd at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field realized the achievement they had witnessed, they cheered in appreciation of the junior's accomplishment.

"When I found out I had 200 career hits, it was a bit of a shock for me because I've only been around for three years," said Olsen.  "It's a very prestigious milestone because only four others, including senior second baseman Mike Chambers earlier this season, have done so."

The rest of the Ravens were excited for their teammate, especially since his hitting helped them win both games of the doubleheader.  They won the first game 8-0 and the second game 4-0.

"When Garrett got his 200th career hit, it wasn't an overwhelming reaction by the team, but everyone was proud of him," said junior Kim Hart, who plays both first base and designated hitter, and has been Olson's teammate for three years.  "We let him know after the game how big his accomplishment was."

Olson has always made it a point to improve his hitting with every game.

"I've changed my swing quite a bit over the years, mainly to add more power to it while maintaining a high batting average at the same time," said Olson. "I always try to maintain a consistently high average to help my team win games."

According to his teammates and coaches, if there's one thing that stands out about Olson it's his work ethic.

"Garrett has always been the one to take extra swings in practice to improve his hitting," Hart said.  "When everyone else has gotten tired, he has stayed those extra minutes to make himself a better baseball player, and it has really paid off for him and the team."

The Ravens will look to continue its winning ways as it hosts Saint Anselm College on Thursday before traveling to the College of Saint Rose on Friday and Assumption College for a doubleheader on Saturday.
