Increase of students impacts FPC campus

With the new 2006-2007 school year well underway, on campus departments are being impacted differently by the large amount of students attending Franklin Pierce.

With the increase of students, the 2006-2007 FPC population is now roughly 1,700 students. As a result, many departments such as Athletics, the cafeteria, Health Services, and Marlin Fitzwater Center have all been affected.

Athletics has been benefiting from the larger population of students. According to Bruce Kirsh, vice president and athletic director, there are more students attending games than last year. There is also a larger amount of students trying out for the sports teams, allowing coaches to be more selective.

One area on campus that has been affected negatively is the cafeteria. The cafe is much "...busier than last year," said Jane Lapointe, a worker in the cafe. Despite the increase in population, the hours of operation will not be extended. When the construction is completed, there will be more seating to help alleviate the rush. As far as timing goes, construction is said to be on time and will be completed before next semester.

The Fitzwater center is constantly maintaining their equipment especially now that there are more students that will be using this equipment. Also, the Fitzwater center has made one accommodation for the larger population by making a third intro to media production class available to students.

Health Services has yet to see any dramatic changes due to the increase in students, but is taking preventative measures this year. They are going on a washing hands campaign to hopefully alleviate any sickness this coming winter. Some of the illnesses expected by the health center are the common sore throat and flu.

In addition to how the cafeteria is coping with the population increase, there have been a few changes in the cafeteria. A few new recipes have been added. Also, there will be a chef who will cook food in front of students on Mondays through Wednesdays. The Fitzwater center is also making a few changes by receiving new pieces of equipment such as a dolly, and a few microphones.

For additional information please contact the respective departments.
