Pujols dominates baseball

by Tony Catinella

Albert Pujols has dominated the major leagues since 2001 and last week he led the St. Louis Cardinals to their first World Series championship since 1982.

He many not wear #3, smoke stogies, and have a dozen different nicknames but Albert Pujols is the next Babe Ruth.  His presence on the field is greater than any player in the game. Last Friday, Albert Pujols led his team to its first World Series in 24 years.

Players go their whole careers without winning a world series. Baseball's greatest hitter, Ted Williams never won one. Cubs great, Ernie banks never won a fall classic series.  Tony Gwynn played 20 seasons and never won. Not even the highest paid major league player, Alex Rodriguez has won a world series. For Albert Pujols, winning comes easy. Pujols has yet to suffer a losing season.

As soon as Pujols entered the major leagues in 2001, he has been unstoppable.  Pujols won rookie of the year honors in 2001 with 37 home runs and 130 RBIs, unthinkable stats from a rookie.  Pujols is now 26 years old and he may be the greatest hitter in the game. Never has he batted less than .300.  His lifetime batting average is .332.  He hits home runs more consistently than anyone in the game today. He already has 250 home runs after five years in the majors.  If he continues this pace he will have 750 home runs by the year 2016 and will be the all time home run king by the age of 36.

Many fans were surprised when the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series last Friday night.  Those fans should have seen it coming.  Albert Pujols has been carrying the Cardinals since the beginning of the season.  In April, Albert Pujols won player of the month honors as he hit 14 home runs, the most ever by a major league player to start a season.  How could the Cardinals actually lose with a player of this caliber?  Pujols led the team in batting average, RBIs, home runs, runs, and almost every offensive category with exception of stolen bases.

Albert Pujols is the greatest player in baseball.  Baseball fans should be honored to be living to see such a baseball God.  This is only Albert Pujols' first championship; who knows how many he'll finish with by the time his career is over.
