Cruise ship Stranded in Antarctic-
AP-A Norwegian Cruise lines vessel
ran aground off a small Antarctic Island with nearly 300 on board awaiting
The ship damaged its hull, but was eventually
able to free itself from the rocks. No one was injured in the accident.
The M/S Nordkapp got off the rocks under its own steam
and sought shelter in a nearby harbor, where the 294 passengers were being
transferred to a sister ship as a precaution.
According to a company spokesperson, the people onboard were never
in any danger after the incident.
Another Norwegian Coastal Vessel, the M/S Nordnorge, sailed
into Walker Bay and the passengers were being transferred onto it in small
boats usually used for sightseeing.
The 404-foot Nordkapp, built in 1996, and the
virtually identical Nordnorge cruise the Antarctic during the southern
hemisphere summer. They sail off the coast of Norway during the European
summer.
The company said the
ship was on its way back to Argentina when it ran aground near Deception
Island, which is part of the South Shetland archipelago.
It said a British warship was
also meeting the Nordkapp, and would send down divers to inspect the damage
to its hull and then escort the ship to port in Argentina.
An estimated 400,000
people gathered in Washington D.C. on Saturday, January 27,
to protest the war in Iraq and President Bush's plan for a troop
increase.
The protest came one day after Bush announced to the
press that he was the "decision-maker" concerning Iraq.
Protesters came from all over the country to be in D.C.,
including celebrity speakers like Sean Penn and Jane Fonda. The
crowd gathered in the National Mall responded with cheers when
Fonda said, "Silence is no longer an option," according to
Associated Press writers Calvin Woodward and Larry Margasak.
Since the beginning of the war in March of 2003, an
estimated 55-60,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed, as
reported by the "Iraqi Body Count Project."
While the death toll for U.S. soldiers approaches 3,100 some
politicians are voicing their opinions against Bush’s policies.
Protesters will continue to gather nationwide. The
"United for Peace and Justice" organization of Washington D.C.
has protests scheduled nationwide in March. The protests will
take place from the 18th through the 20th,
marking the beginning of the war four years ago.
Senior
year can be stressful, and you may have succumbed to the
thought "why wasn’t I a (insert major that seems
comparatively easier
at that time of weakness.)" But how much do you
actually know about
that major? Probably not enough to make such a critical
statement. Or
perhaps you’re just an underclassman weary of choosing
a major for
fear of what may lie ahead. Either way, Senior
Experience is going to
explore each of FPC's majors for you through the
perspective of a
senior who is living it. This week:
