Celebration of Life: Ahmed Boura by Matthew Leite Exchange Writer These days, when an eighteen year old athlete signs a professional sponsorship with the likes of Adidas and receives ten thousand dollars in merchandise, their closet usually fills fast. Ahmed Boura had a lot of friends in his native Lebanon when he was that age, he filled their closets instead. Even though he didn’t know the language when he crossed the ocean, he knew how to earn trust, and was as altruistic with a stranger as a grandfather is with his grandson. “Everything he does, he does with the best interest of others on his mind,” says Marco Koolman, one of Ahmed’s first friends in the U.S. Ahmed is the type of person who would ask to lend you money before you could ask him to borrow - he just feels good about it. His father always told him, “Trust people until they prove the opposite,” He signed one of the six different professional soccer contract offers he received and his eagerness to learn a new culture brought him into the home of an American host family. Ahmed remembered when he was a boy and his mother kept him and all of his friends off of the dangerous streets and let them hang out in their modest little home; good people set examples of how he should lead his life. His host family took him under their wing at a time when all he could give them were tickets to his matches and free coaching. This is something he’ll never forget, and eight years later Ahmed reminds them of it regularly. Through his soccer experiences he found Franklin Pierce College and eventually a degree in leadership. He was able to master the English language and evolve into a terrific communicator, becoming the Director of Individual Giving at the college, a job Ahmed says he loves because, “Before you raise money, you raise friends.” Now Ahmed takes people under
his wing and gives them a place to hang out as his mother did for him. “Step
into my office,” he says in his high toned voice with a glowing smile, “What
can I do for you?” |
