Northwoods gets "last warning" from E.D.

A lack of respect for person and property prompted Junior Area Experience Director Brian Medina to hold a mandatory meeting with the residents of Northwoods on March 5th that became a "last warning" to the residents.

The meeting, which took place in the Northwoods community room, was a mandatory meeting for all the residents of the towers. The major topics discussed by Medina and two other R.A.s from the towers were trash, vandalism, and parties. This was meant to be an open communication Medina said.

The R.A.s addressed the issue of trash by saying, "you're not kids." Medina also told the group of residents that they are all adults and "these are things you should already know."

He said, "You are a community and should respect each other. These problems need to be taken care of internally."

Medina said that he feels that he has been overutilized in areas he's not really needed, and underutilized in areas he is, like roommate problems.  Medina said residents should approach the R.A.s or himself in a situation where a problem can't be resolved between residents of the towers.

The Res Life staff members addressed the issue of un-registered guests and parties. Medina said, "The advantage of registering a party is that I will already know you, you will have the benefit of the doubt, and will receive more leniencies. Whereas unregistered parties will be documented from now on."

Medina said the reason why the Rindge Police Department felt their presence was needed on campus was because of these unregistered parties that grew out of control. He said, "Unregistered parties make it hard to track down who did what (trash, broken windows, etc). We have been nice and gracious, and this has caused bad habits."

Tom Merkt, the R.A. for K tower, addressed the issues of breaking bottles and littering outside the towers with broken glass and beer cans. "It makes our living area look trashy," he said. The purpose of talking about littering was to address the potential health problems. Medina referred to a student who had to be taken to the hospital after stepping barefoot on a piece of broken glass outside of Northwoods last semester. He also mentioned that other campuses have adopted the policy of not allowing glass bottles on campus and that they are trying to avoid this.

Contact Brian Medina at ext. 4355 with any questions.  Residents of Northwoods who missed the mandatory meeting must contact him to schedule an appointment to meet about what was discussed.
