Ice Hockey team looks to start over with new coach
by Jason Gilbert New Franklin Pierce ice hockey coach Scott Loiseau has made the most of his first week as head coach by having his captains hold workouts at 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. Loiseau took over as head coach on March 14 after former coach Jay McCormack resigned in early March after 17 years of running the team. McCormack is now serving as the school's NCAA compliance coordinator. The former varsity hockey athlete and current assistant baseball coach looks to bring his leadership and work ethic to the struggling team that only recorded five victories this past season. Loiseau spent this hockey season as assistant coach for the Ravens where McCormack taught him all phases of the game and the preparation that goes into coaching a division II program, along with game preparation and rule changes. Even though on paper Loiseau does not look very qualified to coach the team, his players feel the opposite. "I like him a lot, he's the kind of guy that does not put up with any nonsense and his leadership and motivation have impressed us so far," said forward Coursen Schneider. The hockey team began using the workouts designed by Loiseau but carried out by their captains this Monday and will be looking to impress their new coach with hard work through the workouts. The workouts consist of weight training, running and plyometrics to make the players stronger over the off-season. "I think coach Loiseau is the kind of guy we need to take this program to where all of us players want it to be," said defensemen Rob Perretta. Perretta added, "Teams are not training this hard this early in the off-season so hopefully it will give us a head start and a leg up on our competition next season." Loiseau was a 2002
graduate of Franklin Pierce where he was a four-year athlete for the
baseball team and he also played one year of ice hockey at FPC. Before his
time at Franklin Pierce he was a four-year letter winner in ice hockey at
Saint Peter-Marian Central Catholic High School in Worcester, Mass. |
