Eighteenth annual Golf Tournament
by Erica Jordan
Exchange Writer
Franklin Pierce University will be holding its
eighteenth annual golf tournament July 16th at the Townsend Rindge Country
Club in Townsend, Massachusetts to raise money for athletic scholarships.
This event is open to anyone who is interested.
In the past this has usually involved around 144 golfers. Typically, thirty six teams of
four are created. This is a fund-raising event in which the money
comes from team sponsorships and is donated to the Don and Judy Schriefer
Scholarship. "A large portion of those funds go towards
scholarships for four student athletes, two male and two female, who receive
the Don and Judy Schriefer
Scholarship Award," said Laurie Alden, event coordinator.
Students who receive the
scholarships are asked to help during this event so that they are able to
meet their sponsors. In 2006, the event raised around $32,000.
The event offers various types of raffles as well.
Different companies donate items that are used in the raffles. One of
the raffles offered is that if a person hits a ball onto the green, they get
to put their name into a raffle for a "special prize." The last
couple years, this special prize was tickets to a Red Sox game. "Other
prizes include gift certificates to restaurants, professional theater
performances, overnight stays, golf outings, and sometimes golf equipment,"
said Alden. Prizes are also given to first, second, and third place
teams.
"Golf is a tradition in the fundraising field, and
there is lots of planning that is involved beforehand. Laurie Alden
plans it all down to a science," said director of alumni relations Peter Brodie.
Students are able to put their own teams together to
play in this tournament, or to just solely volunteer. However,
"students are not eligible for prizes to remain in compliance with NCAA
guidelines," said Brodie. The cost of this event is $175. This
includes a round of eighteen holes, a bagged lunch, banquet dinner, and a
gift bag with a provided item.
This year, the gift will be a
golf shirt. If anyone is interested in this event, contact Laurie
Alden, Peter Brodie, a member of the golf committee, or Evelyn Buchanan,
head of the department.
