Percussion Ensemble performs at Cheney Hall by Scott Farr Exchange Staff The percussion ensemble performed at Cheney Hall on Tuesday as one part of the Spring concert series that is being put on by the music department. This music performance was done with an unusual set of instruments and items that would be found just about anywhere, including a water jug and a beer bottle. There were 11 different compositions at the show, which were performed by all of the students taking the class. The students performing were James Averyt, Joe Deprofio, Matt Galasti, Brittany Gilman, Tim Horgan, Joe Lefebvre, Max Mayo, Shauntaye Merritt-Williams, David Muise, Latazeewanna Pierre and Craig Tinker. They used a variety of objects, including drums, brake pads, an empty water jug, coffee cans, a can with metal objects in it, an empty beer bottle, along with simple instruments like using their bodies and voices in a couple of pieces. They performed for an hour. "The percussion ensemble has all students do their own improvisations and use all different types of sounds. And each student makes their own composition," said music teacher Paul Scharfenberger. The class that the 11 students took part in is a unique class in itself. "The class is a one semester project that usually involves 9-10 people, although we had a large turnout this year," said music teacher Tim Feeney. "It is eight weeks of improvisation by rehearsing once a week for an hour and a half with a bunch of reactions and hand cues that go pretty fast and is not specific." "We use
our own sounds (from stock) and everyone goes home to figure out what they
need for certain sounds," said Feeney. Thursday, April 26: Guitar Ensemble
