by Abbie Tumbleson Democratic candidate Senator John Edwards, made a stop on his campaign trail at a packed Peterborough Town Hall where he denounced the Bush administration, on Wednesday, October 31. "Bush and Cheney cannot be trusted," Edwards said. "You cannot be afraid to say that there is corruption in our government." Edwards discussed his policies on healthcare and education and also answered questions from audience members pertaining to global warming, the current state of America, and the war in Iraq. "Americans are good and strong," he said. "When we see something wrong we do something about." Edwards ended the event by encouraging audience members to support him and his plans for universal healthcare. In addition to Edwards, Peterborough has also hosted several candidates to speak in town. Republican candidate and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani spoke at Peterborough Town Hall on Sunday, October 28. Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have made appearances at the diner in Peterborough, according to Nicole Somero, the Administration Clerk for the Town of Peterborough. "We have many politically active people in this town," Somero said. "It is also a very picturesque and historic town, so candidates like to come here and speak." Edwards’s representatives and several other campaign teams have contacted the Town Hall and have booked it for presidential candidates. According to Somero, this process is identical to the process that a non-profit organization would go through to have their representatives speak at the Town Hall. Franklin Pierce University has also invited political candidates to campus to address their campaigns. Franklin Pierce hosted Democrats Mike Gravel and Bill Richardson in the past month, and College Democrats and College Republicans held a political forum in Pierce Hall on Thursday, October 25, where presidential campaigners passed out information about their candidates. Juniors Justin Martell and Eric Jackman have been active campaign members for Gravel. However, Martell supports more than one candidate for the 2008 election. "I like Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, and Ron Paul," he said. "I was actively campaigning for Kucinich last year." Some students predict that big-name candidates who have been leading the polls will face an upset. "I think the election isn't going to go the way
people think its going to go," said Zach Weight, College Democrats
President. |
