The team hosted "Digs for the Cure" night where the money raised went towards the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Each player was asked to gather pledges from family members and friends. Pledges were either based on the flat amount or the number of digs per player. A dig is anything that comes off a spike or a block from the opposing team, explained head coach Sharon Bonaventure. Tuesday night the team came out with 71 digs, the most they've had in a three game match all season, said Bonaventure. Donations were also given at the door. "Totals won't be ready until next week, but $130 was collected just from walk-ins, "said Bonaventure. However, players estimate that over a thousand dollars was raised. Digs for the Cure night, put together by Bonaventure, placed the Franklin Pierce women's volleyball team among other NCAA teams who also choose their own home match in October to support this cause. "This is the first time we've done this. However, we would like to make it an annual thing," said Bonaventure. Team members would also like to see this event take place again. "I would really like to see this continue here at Franklin Pierce. It went really well. It's a very good organization to donate to. All players really came together to raise money," said sophomore Kelly Mahoney. The girls also wore pink ribbons, pink tape, and pre-wrap during the match to show their support. "It is a great cause. Anything we can do to support the cause, we will do," said Bonaventure. The volleyball team
also took part in a five mile breast cancer walk in Boston earlier this
month. |
