Dominican Republic declares State of Emergency

Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez is asking for international help in the wake of Tropical Storm Noel which has already killed at least 81 in the Caribbean.
Rescue teams and helicopters are also sought internationally to help with the recovery of survivors and victims of Noel. So far, there are at least 86 people dead in the Dominican Republic and another 24 dead in Haiti. One more person was killed in Jamaica.  According to Head of Emergencies Commission
Luis Antonio Luna at least 14,500 homes were damaged.
Fernandez declared a 30-day state of emergency to recover from the damage caused by mudslides, hurricane winds, and floods. Residents have been evacuated from potential flood zones.
The storm is currently moving from the Dominican Republic and Haiti towards the coasts of Georgia and Florida. Both states are experiencing strong winds and waves washing out beaches.

Difference in crack jail terms now eliminated

Possessing a gram of crack used to be treated like having 100 grams of powder cocaine, but new federal sentencing guidelines went into effect on Nov. 1, changing that.
The average sentence for crack possession would drop by about two years, according to the New York Times.  In two weeks the federal sentencing commission will meet to decide if the new sentences should apply to the roughly 19,500 crack offenders now in federal prison.
Under the previous guidelines, it took possession of 5,000 grams of powder cocaine to get a ten year sentence.  However, it only took 50 grams of crack to get the same jail term.  Civil rights advocates had longer pointed out that the guidelines, established in 1987, unfairly targeted blacks.  Eighty percent of those sentenced for crack were minorities.
There are currently three bills before Congress, one from Democrats and two from Republicans, that would reduce or eliminate minimum sentences for minor drug possession.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Are we going to see more Facebook ads?

In the midst of online-advertising inflation the Microsoft Corporation invested $240 million in the Facebook Inc. on Wednesday, October 24 according to The Wall Street Journal. This leaves Microsoft with a 1.6% stake in the networking site, valuing it at $15 billion. This is in addition to Microsoft's initial agreement to take over Facebook's U.S. advertising sales.

International versions of Facebook are starting up.  Microsoft's investment  now not only includes selling Facebook's U.S. ads but its international ones as well.

What does this mean for Facebook? Well for its 50 million plus users, most of them the young age that advertisers target, this may mean an increase in the number of ads that they will view when logging into their Facebook accounts.

You're at the prime age for dreaming about going to class naked

Do you think all those horror movies and spooky stories you watch are leading to nightmares?  The definition of a nightmare is a bad dream that is scary enough to wake a person from a deep sleep.
The brain goes through four stages of sleep during the night, the REM (rapid eye movement) cycle is where dreaming occurs and 90 percent of this is spent dreaming.  A host of studies have shown that three-quarters of the emotions described in our dreams are negative.  According to sleep researchers we spend three to four hours a night in a state of frustration or anxiety as our teeth fall out, or we are confronted by 12 headed monsters or suffer from a complete inability to run away from the things that are chasing us.
The brain and the limbic system and how they are affected by the REM cycle greatly influence the strange and sometimes horrific images and feelings we experience while dreaming.  The limbic system becomes incredibly active, much more than when you are awake, and this is why we are emotionally on edge during our dreams.  The amygdale and anterior cingulate cortex constitute what psychologist Steven H Woodward calls the “axis of fear.”  This is in full drive while our rational thought and critical reasoning are not active, this explains why fantastic imagery in our dreams are so predominate.
We are in a prime age for having nightmares, they will decrease the older we get.  The average 55 year old has one-third of the number of nightmares as the average 25 year old.  Studies show that women and girls have a higher number of nightmares, which may be related to higher rates of anxiety and mood disorders.  A dream journal is a great way to keep track of your dreams, which according to many studies consists mostly of boogeymen, falling, monsters and showing up to class naked.
