Craig Romney turns heads, including mine
by Hilary delaBruere

For those that were unable to attend Monday's unfortunate visit with Mitt
Romney's son and daughter in-law, Craig Romney and Mary Romney, I can tell
you that it was nothing short of a narrow-minded and hypocritical statement
on what defines a family and its values.
"I think he would define family as a husband, a wife,
and children," Craig Romney said, referring to his father's (Mitt Romney's)
views on family values, something he holds as a priority in his presidential
campaign.
Craig said he thinks that it is important to his father
and himself that children growing up in this nation have a mother and a
father. Craig and Mitt Romney both think that it's going to be very
difficult to "succeed" as a nation and as a family because so many children
in the U.S. are being born out of wedlock or are being born into
single-mother and single-father homes.
In defining a family in a very particular, small, and
heterosexual way, Craig Romney posed a personal attack on same-sex couples
and single parents, proclaiming that in order to have family values and a
successful family one needs both a mother and a father and that by no means
is anyone else capable of that feat.
Well, Mr. Craig Romney, Mitt Romney, Mary Romney and
all the other Romneys, do I have news for you. I was raised by a single
mother and here I am embarking on my last year of college, and ready to go
out and make a difference in the world as a journalist. If that doesn't
define success then I don't know what does. (Now, don't get me wrong, I am
not saying that in order to be successful one has to graduate from college).
Romney also attacked same-sex marriage, saying that a
marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman, something I
wholeheartedly disagree with.
One person in the audience declared that Romney's views
on homosexuals are "utterly disgusting," and asked Craig what he and his
father will do to bridge that gap between people who feel likewise.
Craig
replied, "We preach an education of tolerance." "I agree to disagree,"
he said.
As we are all entitled to our beliefs, and what rings
true for someone is not necessarily the same for another; I take this to
heart. I respect it. However, I do not regard nor do I tolerate anyone who
would go so far as to pass judgment on one's family values based upon their
orientation or their disposition. Mitt Romney will not have my vote in
2008.
