Students speak out about bathroom conditions

Foul smells, feces used as art on the mirrors, and the town dump scattered around is not how some would picture your bathroom to look like, but here at Franklin Pierce the dormitories extend what the imagination could think up.

"They are as clean as a sewer rat's a**," said sophomore Nichole Cummings. That is the common attitude among residents when asked about the state of cleanliness in the bathrooms on this campus.

The men's halls are commonly known as being messier as the women's halls, "The boys leave trash everywhere," said an anonymous resident. "At least take out your own trash or keep the beer cans near the sinks or in the trash."

Now, please explain to me when we all turned ten again and decided that we couldn't figure out how to throw away garbage into the designated areas or even to flush toilets after you use them. Honestly is that really a hard concept to follow?

"The bathrooms in my hall are disgusting," said Edgewood resident Jeff Woods. "People leave trash all over the floor and vomit all around the toilets. Sometimes my feet even stick to the floor."

Some would be quick to blame the cleaning staff that works everyday to keep the restrooms clean. An EVS worker who wished to remain anonymous stated that there are only, "a total of 12 workers that are stretched real thin."

Is it feasible to say that 12 people should be responsible for cleaning six residential halls with multiple bathrooms in each building? "I have to cut the bathrooms short because I have to run between here and freshman dorms," said the source.

The cleaning staff works everyday, except Sundays. "We are allowed in the buildings after 8 a.m. because you all are still sleeping generally and we have to be completely done by 1:30 p.m."

In the cleaning process, the staff dry mops the bathrooms, wet mops them down, washes the walls, cleans in the toilet areas, and scrubs the shower/sink areas.

"Our cleaning lady works so hard, but people are slobs so it gets really messy all the time," said sophomore Lauren Gamer.

There is a simple answer to all these problems: People should clean up after themselves. It is not really that hard of a concept to understand. We're all basically adults, so act like it. Nobody enjoys going to the bathroom and first having to leap through a mountain of garbage. Also, do not blame the cleaning staff because they have one of the hardest jobs on campus. You think you have it tough? Do you spend your days cleaning up vomit, garbage, and other disgusting things in a residential bathroom, where you would generally think problems like this would be contained?

Call Facilities and see if you can find out why there are only 12 people to man six entire buildings themselves. Then, talk to your fellow residents and ask them why they find it so difficult to clean up after themselves with whatever mess they make.
