Despite the home team falling short of its goal of perfection, Pierce Activities Council's public screening of Super Bowl XLII in Pierce Hall Sunday night was a success.

Attendance for the annual event, which utilized Pierce Hall's projection television and movie-screen-size display, doubled from last year, when the Indianapolis Colts went up against the Chicago Bears.  This year's match up certainly had more prominence and proximity to football fans on campus.

"There were 45 students at one point," said Dan Shelley, director of the event and PAC Publicity Recruitment Chair.  He admitted his uncertainty over how strong attendance would be due to the broad availability of places to watch the game.

"It was 60-40 Pats fans," said Shelley, of the divided and rowdy crowd, which was surprised to see the 18-0 Patriots lose.  "They expected the Pats to make history.  It was mostly Pats fans at the end, so it was quiet."

For the event, PAC provided free chicken wings from KFC, along with soda, chips and cake.  Other special Super Bowl services on campus Sunday night included extended hours for the Raven's Nest Pub.

"We opened earlier, and people took advantage of that," said  Nancy McMillan, Retail Manager of Dining Services.  McMillan noticed a big crowd at the Pub prior to the game, mostly picking up orders.  "Not too many came during the game. The real crowd was upstairs at the PAC event."

With the success of this Super Bowl screening, Shelley and the Pierce Activities Council is looking ahead to similar future events.  A New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox weekend series screening is certainly one possibility, with baseball-themed foods, such as hotdogs and nachos.
