Women's softball anticipating upcoming season by Alycia Brandt Exchange Staff The 2008 Women's Softball team has seen some changes this season with the addition of a new assistant coach Michelle McConnell and also a new tournament destination - Tucson, AZ. McConnell has returned to Franklin Pierce as the new assistant softball coach after graduating in 2007. Richard Hurley, head coach, and Dan Connelly, assistant coach, feel that McConnell will be a great addition to the 2008 coaching staff. "She is fun, positive, and has some great tips to keep the girls on their toes," said Connelly. "The girls simply have to remain determined and positive and I feel like I can help them with this," McConnell said after lecturing third baseman, Erin Clark on being confident. In addition to the new assistant coach, the softball team will be traveling for the first time to Tucson, Arizona, a new location compared to Florida in the previous years. "Although I have never been to Florida or Arizona for a softball tournament, I think the seniors and other players will enjoy the change of scenery and just have fun no matter what," said freshman Caitlin Beagan. The team will leave on March 14th and return on the 23rd. In Tucson the team will play in a tournament consisting of a series of ten games, win or lose. Although the Tucson Tournament is a team event, the players must raise money on their own in order to attend. Last semester the players who wished to participate in the tournament worked at a Patriots game in December and asked for donations. This semester they are raffling off tickets to a Yankees vs. Red Sox game for $5 a ticket. "The girls seem excited for the tournament this year, raising the money should be no problem," said coach Richard Hurley. |
