Safe Rides vs. Drunk Driving?

by Audra Clark & Alycia Brandt
Exchange Staff

Two point one million students between the ages of 18 and 24 drove under the influence of alcohol in 2001. Despite this statistic students across the Franklin Pierce University campus are curious as to why Safe Rides does not drive them to local bars in order to alleviate the risk of driving under the influence.

According to Mike Patinsky, Safe Rides was originally created to bus students back and forth from the condos when they were in use. Now that senior housing has been moved on campus to Lakeview, perhaps it is time for Safe Rides to expand its mission.

Patinsky also stated that there used to be a shuttle to Keene however, it was not cost effective. Now that the University no longer has to drive students back and forth to the condos, located across the street on Rt 119, so the budget should allow for the inclusion of Harlow's Pub only 20 minutes down the road.

Transportation to Harlow's can allow for students to have a safe ride to and from the pub. This measure will help prevent Franklin Pierce students from being entered into statistics like the 1,131 young adults who died in alcohol related crashes in 2003.
