Snow and ice cancel classes, knock out power by Matthew Relyea Exchange Staff At Franklin Pierce University this past Wednesday, snow and ice brought the campus and surrounding areas to a standstill. Roughly six inches of snow fell late Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, then came down as ice, creating about an inch and a half layer of ice on top of the snow and covering tree limbs and power lines. After the snow and ice had stopped, it rained from about 9 AM until the early evening hours. All of these different weather conditions created strenuous problems for students on campus. "I went to dig my car out because I needed to go to the store and get some food and it literally took me over an hour to get my car cleaned off and out of the parking spot because it was just too icy," said senior Ryan Milligan. While digging cars out and trying to get across campus without falling down or getting soaked by the rain was a major problem for students, the campus began to feel the repercussions of another winter storm. At roughly 11AM, the power went out throughout campus, leaving students wondering how in the world were they suppose to function with no classes and no power. "I woke up, saw that classes had been canceled, went back to bed, woke up again and the power was out, so I basically sat around all day and tried to figure out something to do," said Senior Zach Meyers. As students sat through the day on campus without power and not a whole lot to do, the power came back on at 5 PM, to the relief of the school and to students. "We had already started our evacuation plans of students to the bubble because if the power was to not come back on, we would had to move all of the students to a safe location," said director of residential life Ken Ervin. |
