Ireland's Deputy PM  to replace scandal-hit Ahern

The path quickly cleared Thursday for Brian Cowen to become Ireland's next prime minister after virtually the entire Cabinet backed him to replace Bertie Ahern.
Cabinet heavyweight Cowen, 48, appears likely to be the only candidate when nominations for the next leader of Fianna Fail, Ireland's perennial No. 1 party, close Monday. Analysts expect him to receive unanimous backing from Fianna Fail lawmakers the following day and formally replace Ahern when the parliament elects a new prime minister May 7.
He has been a loyal Ahern lieutenant throughout the past 11 years of his government, and has served since 2004 as both deputy prime minister and finance minister. Cowen has been known as "the anointed one" ever since Ahern declared him his preferred successor 10 months ago.
Cowen's lock on the top job became apparent as more than a dozen Cabinet colleagues declared they would not challenge him. The lone remaining holdout was Transport Minister Noel Dempsey, who refused to comment.

Backers cited Cowen's exceptionally broad experience as minister atop six government departments since 1992.

Bush is largely absent in economic crisis

President Bush has become detached from the nation's economic problems towards the end of his presidency.
In February, when he asked about predictions of $4-a-gallon gasoline, President Bush admitted that he had not heard about it.
Next, President Bush warned Wall Street against "massive government intervention in the housing markets," just two days before his own administration had a hand in brokering the Bear Stearns takeover.
Currently, the president is in Eastern Europe, one of eight international trips he has taken this year. While delivering his farewell speech to NATO on Wednesday, Senate Democrats and Republicans were in Washington, struggling to make a bill to help struggling homeowners, the very sort of government intervention the president had discouraged.
As the economy becomes more important to voters then Iraq some Republican allies of the president say Mr. Bush is in danger of looking out of touch.
With the nation's attention fixed in the race to replace President Bush, it is becoming ever more difficult for him to dominate the national stage. Also President Bush has "ceded his bully pulpit on the economy to other Washington figures."

Top 10 Science Hoaxes of All Time

Earlier this week the Discovery Channel released this year’s Top 10 Science Hoax list. The list includes “the most famous debunked hoaxes in science and discovery.”

Failing to make the grade for this year’s list included: The Nacirema Tribe - supposedly the Nacirema were a tribe of people living in North America that were described in an anthropological paper by Horace Miner, published in 1956. It was actually a satire of everyday American life. ("Nacirema" is "American" spelled backward.)

Here is the Top 10 Science Hoaxes of All Time list according to the Discovery Channel:

     10) Stone-Age tribe found living in the present day

      9) Potato web server

      8) The Iguanodon as a crawling horned dinosaur.

      7) Blondes will be extinct in 200 years

      6) Crop circles (at least some of them)

      5) Archaeoraptor (a definitive missing link between dinosaurs and birds)

      4) James' Ossuary (a.k.a. the "Jesus box")

      3) Mars as big as the Moon

      2) Piltdown man

      1) The Raelians and Clonaid

Read more in-depth about each hoax and the article.

HEALTH AWARENESS

An early defense for allergy season

Spring is coming, whether you like it or not. If you don’t enjoy the warm weather or blooming flowers and trees it is probably due to your allergies. If you have never experienced symptoms like red, itchy eyes, a cough or nasal drips before you aren’t completely in the clear. These are a few tips that anyone can use to help prevent acquiring these and other symptoms.

Spring Cleaning: get started by clearing out the dust and mold from the damp winter months.

Like your mother always told you, wash your hair before going to bed. Pollen and other allergens can cling to bed sheets and pillow cases after being outdoors.

If you experience symptoms there are many over-the-counter antihistamine products that can be taken everyday such as Zyrtec and Claritin.  It is recommended to use antihistamine eye drops to treat all symptoms, as oppose to decongestant drops that simply relieve redness.
