Behind the scenes with Casey Bolduc

It was an interesting exercise writing the feature about Jarrett Johnston and his drunk driving accident.  Not only was it a test of how I would handle writing about something that needed to be handled delicately, so not to offend or make Jarrett angry, but it was a test for me to separate myself from the story.  Everyone interviewed in the article is a close friend of mine, which made it easy to catch up with them but made it difficult to use their quotes and input without adding my own perspective.

I heard about his accident at the same time Chris MacLean did, the morning after it happened while we were at work, and I was at the party along the Merrimack River the night Jarrett left for home.  I feel a little guilty for not having been there to stop him and a little angry that no one else did, neither of which I could put in the article because of the way I had written it.

The toughest part was talking to his family because they still have sympathy for the kid, since he still has screws and metal plates throughout his body.  But the piece was about his learning experience and how he doesn’t want sympathy for his dumb-mistake, so it was hard to ask questions with these contrasting views of the situation.
