Fitzwater students to pitch documentary idea to PBS

Mass Communication students in the Fitzwater Center have answered PBS's call for pitching "a compelling video short about the 2008 Election."

PBS is sponsoring a contest called "Tell America Your Election Story."  Those who enter the contest are asked to pitch an idea for a 3-4 minute documentary about a unique aspect of the 2008 election.  According to the contest's webpage, PBS is "offering the public a chance to make its voice heard before the voting booths open."

The group that submits the most compelling pitch will be given $2,000 to make their short film.  Dr. Nevious, Director of the Fitzwater Center, is very excited that students from Franklin Pierce University will be entering the contest, "This is an extraordinary opportunity for students of the Fitzwater Center and Franklin Pierce University to have their voices heard in the public debate which is so essential to the health of our democracy," she said.

So far, three students have signed on to the project. "I've been very interested in this election, as I believe it is a very important one," said junior Jeff Cornell, who will be working on the project. "I also had the unique opportunity to witness so much of the process because of the New Hampshire Primary."

Not wanting to give too much detail away as to what their story idea is, Cornell hinted that "the pitch will most certainly have something to do with the New Hampshire primary and the struggle to keep New Hampshire first in the nation."

Cornell's hints at the topic of the pitch were further solidified when he conceded that those working on the pitch have been in touch with Harry Levine, founder of Victory NH, a citizens activist network dedicated to keeping New Hampshire's primary first in the nation.  Victory NH activists were very visible during the primary season, as they bird-dogged every single presidential candidate and stressed to them the importance of New Hampshire remaining first in the nation.

The deadline for the pitch ideas is May 2nd, and if chosen, production on the short documentary will begin immediately thereafter.
