Campus community reacts to racist vandalism

Exchange Staff
The displays of racist comments in residential
areas this spring have provoked a reaction from not only the administration,
but from the student body, as well. Aron "Cal" Butler, an
accounting major from California, is
pioneering an effort to encourage unbias interpersonal unity on campus.
After meeting with university personnel Jim
Earle, Bill Beardslee, Donna Decker, Brian Medina and Doug Carty on Thursday
at an FPU Faculty Student Forum, Butler sat down with the Exchange staff and
shared information regarding proposed campus events on May 1st.
They are intended to help further the dignity of campus life, he says.
"There will be a lot of fun student activities like a
dance, followed by a reflection telling. Students are invited to come and
share their experiences and views with each other in a recorded forum," said
Butler. "At the end of the day, we'll have a giant collaboration of diverse
individuals to celebrate a better understanding of each other."
"Hate on your iPod" is a proposed
event that will allow students to view other students' music collections,
and also re-evaluate their own.
The idea of a future Big
Brother – Big Sister On Campus program is also being discussed.
"Basically, it would be
students volunteering time to other students to shape memorable friendships,
quality networks and the passing on of Franklin Pierce tradition," said
Butler. "The passion of experience joined with the insight of ambition."
The chairing committee hopes to publish further information
about the May 1st events by
Tuesday, April 22.
