23rd Oozeball tournament to be held May 3rd!

With the Annual Oozeball Tournament right around the corner, students at Franklin Pierce are preparing to get down and dirty in one of the longest run events in Franklin Pierce intramural history: mud volleyball.

This year's event will mark the 23rd Oozeball Tournament. Amy McMullin, a two-year graduate from Franklin Pierce, played in the tournament all four years of her college career. "No question, the best part was the mud," McMullin said in a phone interview, "I participated in a lot of intramural events while I was at Franklin Pierce, but Oozeball was definitely my favorite."

Oozeball is identical to a game of four-on-four volleyball with the exception that it is played in the mud.  "It's a fun tournament for people who aren't afraid to get a little dirty," said Andrew Papefthemiou, the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation. "On a warm day it draws a pretty good crowd and provides good entertainment for the students." The tournament is single elimination based on one match scores.  A match winner will have to win two-out-of-three games which are played to 11 points.

Oozeball is a huge event at colleges around the United States.  The University of Connecticut holds an annual Oozeball Tournament that draws over 1,000 players and spectators each year.  Some schools use the tournament to raise money, but at Franklin Pierce the goal is for a good time to be had by all.

Alex Brandt, a sophomore planning to take part in this year's event, stated, "I just really like to get dirty, so making rolling around in the mud into such a competitive game is great."

This tournament is one of the last intramural events put on by Campus Recreation this semester.  Intramurals has been a huge success this year as more students have gotten involved than in the past.  Papefthemiou said "We are the verge of breaking last year's numbers with over 800 participants in each semester."  The numbers that this tournament are projected to bring in should put them over that breaking point.

This year's tournament will be on Saturday, May 3 at Noon and will be held next to the Boat House by Pearly Pond.  For more information contact Andrew Papefthemiou at Papefthemioua@franklinpierce.edu.
