DUI creates birthday blues

For most college students, the end of classes marks a time of celebration and the beginning of a summer full of fun and freedom. However for sophomore Andy Sweet, three beers resulted in spoiled plans.

Sweet maintains a 3.3 GPA and is an active member of the Franklin Pierce community. Nevertheless, a DUI last year led to the suspension of Sweet's driver's license and a loss of trust from his parents. Sweet drank three beers before driving back to campus on a weeknight; he was pulled over and refused a breathalyzer test. "I refused the breathalyzer because I figured they couldn't determine my sobriety if I didn't take the test."

The aftermath of the incident led to a six month license suspension as well as mandatory Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. "If I could do it all over I would I have listened to my instincts, I would not get behind the wheel after having anything to drink at all," Sweet said.

Rather than spending his summer sitting around moping at his lack of transportation, Sweet signed up to be a camp counselor and made the best of his situation. "Camp wasn't bad, but if I had my license I would be making more money because I used to work at a country club that I could drive to." Since Sweet had to stay away from home and work, he was unable to reunite with many of his friends from high school.

"I got the DUI on my birthday, you can never get a birthday back. My nineteenth birthday will probably go down in history as my worst," Sweet said.
