Hometown Hero, an interview with Bailey Gaffney

by Erica Jordan
Exchange Staff

Erica Jordan:
Where are you from?

Bailey Gaffney: Richmond, Virginia

EJ: Is it different than Rindge, New Hampshire?

BG: Virginia is a lot warmer, and whenever it snows, even like an inch, everything gets shut down

EJ: Why and how did you choose to come to Franklin Pierce? Where else did you look?

BG: Well, my mom is totally the type to visit on the weekends, so I wanted something that had a little distance.  I looked everywhere:  California, North Carolina, and a few schools in Virginia, but I wanted to be a political science major and with the New Hampshire primary season I thought it might be a good fit.

EJ: What is your major here on campus and what made you choose it?

BG: I have always wanted to be a lawyer, and since they don't really have a pre-law program I thought political science might work out.  I am also a double major in Psychology as well and I am challenged by my professors in and outside of class.

EJ: I hear you are actively involved in our campus, what sort of activities and clubs are you involved in and why do you do them?

BG:  I am the President of the Student Government, Vice President of both the Law Club and Students In Free Enterprise (S.I.F.E.).  I am a coordinator for the Rindge Food Pantry and a Peer Leader for Academic Services.  I really like keeping myself busy and so I try to make it to a few additional club meetings to see and hear what everyone is working on.  The student leaders really do a great job bringing different program opportunities to campus!

EJ:  Who has influenced you the most in your life and why?

BG:  My mom and I are just alike, and I have a great deal of respect for her.  She has taught me the true meaning of hard work, but she has always been there to support me both academically and through my extracurricular activities.

EJ:  What do you hope to do once you graduate college?

BG:   I really want to go to Law School and pursue my Juris Doctorate.

EJ:  What is your greatest accomplishment here at Franklin Pierce?

BG:  I think my greatest accomplishment is probably the First In the Nation Scholar program.  I have been working with the FIN program since the summer of 2007, traveling to Iowa twice over the past year to observe the political culture and the Iowa Caucus.  I was also here in the state of New Hampshire during the Presidential Primary observing some of the candidates running for political office.  I am really proud of the program and all of the students that took part in it.  I think it's safe to say that we all had a lot of fun!

EJ:  What is one thing people may not know about you?

BG:  I have a stuffed animal named MOO SHOO PORK... she's a girl!

EJ:  Who is your favorite professor here at Franklin Pierce and why?

BG:  I have really enjoyed working with Rob Koch.  He is my Psychology advisor and I have worked with him during orientation as his peer leader as well.  I have taken a few classes with him and I really appreciate the laid back atmosphere.

EJ:  What is the day in the life of you on your busiest day from morning to night?

BG:  My busiest days are typically Wednesday, and last Wednesday was particularly busy:

      11:00-12:15 Psychology Class

      12:15-1:30 Students In Free Enterprise

      2:00-2:50 Psychology Class

      3:00-5:00 Presidential Search Committee

      5:00-6:30 SGA E-board Meeting

      6:30-9:00 Student Government Senate Meeting

      HOMEWORK UNTIL BEDTIME.

EJ:  Do you have any advice for underclassman or students in general?

BG:  Every college experience is what you make it... so get involved and be proactive!

EJ:  What do you see yourself in 10 years doing?

BG:   I would like to start my own law practice and hopefully have a family.

EJ:  Any plans for internships or jobs with your major?

BG:  I plan to intern in Washington D.C. so I am working on my application with the Washington Center now.

EJ:  Now for some fun facts! What is your favorite food?

BG:  Carrots and mustard

EJ:  Favorite clothing brand?

BG:  J-Crew and Banana Republic

EJ:  Favorite movie?

BG:  Grease

EJ:  What do you like to do on a typical weekend?

BG:  Sleep in.

EJ:  Favorite travel spot?

BG:  Charleston, South Carolina
