Reality Check is unhappy with rehearsal space by Molly Buccini Exchange Staff "Reality Check," isn't getting the credit that it deserves, according to Marabeth Farmer, Community Service director. Reality Check has struggled to find a place to rehearse this year. Because of the nature of their practices, which include skits where the students fall to the ground, a carpeted floor is a necessity, according to the members. "It's a safety issue," said Farmer. "A slate floor is not conducive to doing theater improvisations or doing skits where people fall to the floor." Farmer believes that Pierce Hall would have been the best option for the group. In the past they had used the Mountain View Conference Room and the room below the Black Box Theatre. Because of the increase in students participating, those venues became too small. "Reality Check wants to use Pierce Hall but it's not my call to book the room for them," said Peter Michael Kinney, Director of Conference Activities and Scheduling. According to Kinney, the President and the Senior Staff decide Pierce Hall's schedule, and Pierce Hall is currently only being used for special events and as a student lounge. "If they want to use it then we would have to have it open to any club…then there would be no place for special events," said Kinney. Reality Check is a group of 22 students who perform skits at schools and different communities about issues that teens often face, such as drunk driving, safe sex, drug use, and bullying. Reality Check is currently using the Lakeside Classroom as their rehearsal space. It does not have a carpeted floor and at the beginning and end of every rehearsal they must reset the classroom back to its original format. "It's definitely a huge problem," said Kimberly Cremens, a sophomore Reality Check member. "The acoustics are horrible at Lakeside and it causes us to only be able to practice one skit at a time. We've had to extend our rehearsal by an hour." Farmer said that the students need an area where they are able to be loud, active, and physical. "It's not that I have a problem with other groups using venues…but it seems like we aren't as important," said Farmer. Kinney said, "Part of the mission of Franklin Pierce is Community Service, so to think that that people think it's not important is simply not true. It is unfortunate that we can't find a spot for Reality Check to rehearse, but there has been an issue with every proposed spot. We need to work with what we are given, and compromise." |
