Challenges of Math and Science classes present at Project Learning Tree Conference

For the first time, students of Professor Lynn Chandler's Challenges of Math and Science Class presented at the Project Learning Tree Conference in Plymouth, NH on November 13th.

Each of the students attending presented posters from lessons they taught to children in Marlow, New Hampshire. The class had previously been trained in Project Learning Tree, an environmental education curriculum, in September of this year.

The students then taught kindergarten through filth grade at J.D Perkins Elementary School. "Over a six week period the students taught the children about the importance of trees, the environment, etc.," said Professor Chandler.

This type of teaching is part of a place based education. Laura Stone, a junior and participant of the conference, said, "Place based education is when you take advantage of the schools surrounding area.  Marlow's school is surrounded by woods so my lesson in particular works well with this because they (the kids) get to go out and take advantage of their local woods."

Professor Chandler attended a workshop this past June and was trained in P.L.T. She made partners with P.L.T coordinators and was able to make arrangements to be involved at the conference.

Jessica Hill, a junior, said before the conference, "By going to the conference, we will have gained experience in talking to professionals about our lessons and our philosophy of education. This will hopefully help us to improve our own teaching skills and practices as we all are heading for student teaching in the near future."
