Men's and Women's basketball played their first home games of the season Wednesday against the University of Massachusetts Lowell, in front of a large crowd at the Fieldhouse for "Pierce Pride Night."

The Women's team started the night's action with a 83-80 come-from-behind victory, while the Men fell behind quickly and suffered their first lost, 64-44.

“We made some mistakes that allowed them some easy looks early and they got hot," said Men's coach David Chadbourne.

UMass Lowell got "hot" late in the first half when it outscored Franklin Pierce 25-3 in a seven minute span.  The charge was fueled by three-point shooting, and lead by Junior Victor Colon. The River Hawks made 10 three-pointers in the first half, while only missing six, and Colon scored all of his game-high 16 points.

"Our goal was to work inside-out and we were lucky. The basketball Gods were looking out for us," said UMass Lowell coach Greg Herenda. "When you’re making threes like that, I believe it's a product of sharing the ball. When you're just jacking them up, its not."

Coach Chadbourne continued "We came into the game averaging 80 points. I think we need to work more on our zone offense. We'll put it behind us. We're a better team than that."

The Women's team overcame a 31-27 deficit at halftime, and withstood an eight-point run by UMass at the end of the game to earn their second win of the season, and first in the conference. The Ravens are ranked fourth in the Nation, according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II poll, after finishing last year in the National Tournament's Elite Eight.

"We have a lot to learn from it," said sophomore Cynthia Gaudet, who played the third-most minutes with 31 and added seven points and two steals. "There’s bigger games ahead so we need to learn from it and move on."

Junior Johannah Leedham, last year's State Farm/WBCA Division II Player of the Year and Great Britain International Team member, earned her 16th career 30-point game, leading the Ravens with 34 points and 12 rebounds.

As a part of "Pierce Pride Night", sponsored by Residential Life, white t-shirts were handed out to create a "white out", while free pom-poms were awarded to the first 100 students in attendance. The "Pierce Pride" initiative was set up by the Athletic Department to create more support for campus athletics.

The Women travel to Stonehill College Saturday for their second Conference match-up, while the Men will participate in the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic in Saint Petersburg, Florida on November 28th. Both teams return home December 3rd to face Le Moyne College.
