Ravens' Carbon Challenge 2014
April 1 - April 30, 2014

THE RAVENS' CARBON CHALLENGE GOALS:

  • Reduce our consumption of electricity, which is generated at the expense of our human and planetary communities.
  • Help keep our university’s commitment to climate neutrality as an ACUPCC signatory.
  • Achieve the goals of our Climate Action Plan and create a sustainable lifestyle and campus culture.

WHY COMPETE IN THE RAVENS’ CARBON CHALLENGE?

  • FPU’s average annual electricity bill is over $450,000. This is real money that can be used in better ways.
  • Saving energy and money are worthy practices not only for the University but for your own personal finances. Whether you currently pay or will pay utility bills after FPU, sustainability is a good habit to keep.
  • Winners of the Ravens’ Carbon Challenge will be rewarded with a celebration of our shared achievement as a campus community.

HOW TO WIN:
Win the Carbon Challenge by reducing the total on-campus electricity consumption in the month of April.

The average electricity used from 2011, 2012, and 2013 will be calculated and compaired with the April, 2014 electricity usage. The Challenge will be won if the 2014 April kilowatt hours (kwh) used is less than the Average kwh used of the past three years. If the April 2014 kwh used is less than 457,407 (3-year average) or even better; lower than 424,839 (2013 kwh used), the Sustainability Council will host a party.

- 500,837 KWH Used in April, 2011
- 446,545 KWH Used in April, 2012
- 424,839 KWH Used in April, 2013
- ___,___ KWH Used in April, 2014

The April 2014 KWH Results will be announced around the first week in May.

(500,837 + 446,545 + 424,839) ÷ 3 = 457,407 Average kwh used in the month of April.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
:

  • This Carbon Challenge is about reducing electricity... what does carbon have to do with electricity?

When natural resources (such as coal and natural gas) are burned at power stations to generate electricity, carbon dioxide gas (among other gases and by-products) are released into the environment. Further, the mining or drilling and transportation of the above raw materials also burns fuel, which produces carbon waste.
  • What about Manchester, Lebanon, Portsmouth and Goodyear?

Unfortunately, The Carbon Challenge does not include the Graduate and Professional Studies locations, however, you may still choose to reduce your electricity consumption and continue to practice a sustainable lifestyle. CGPS will be discussed at the next planning meeting.
