6/11/14 - Phishing emails affect on FPU Email

There has recently been a rash of phishing e-mails spreading their way around our mail systems. These emails have now been clicked on enough times that we are seeing a delay in our email delivery. If you have sent an email to hotmail, aol, and/or yahoo and not have received a response, it may be put in a a delay queue. Once our systems have been put in this queue, there is nothing we can do to expedite the delivery process. We are asking that you please pay close attention to what you are clicking on in your email. Please read the following instructions to better keep the Universities email systems safe and reliable:

Did you get an email recently that brought you to a web page that asked for your password? If so, it is likely a phishing scam. Phishing is a technique that takes advantage of users who are not being careful, and asks for their username and password.

The simple way to avoid phishing is to look at the address bar before you enter your username and password. Does the address bar (example images below) contain “ franklinpierce.edu”? If not, and you just put in your password, you may have given a hacker your password! Please be responsible with your credentials, and if you have suspicions about an email, please forward it to the IT help desk and we can tell you if it is safe to open or not. Sometimes mistakes are made, if you realize that you may have just been a victim of phishing, change your password as soon as possible! If you need assistance changing your password, the IT helpdesk would be glad to assist you with this. For password issues, please call in for assistance – (603) 899–4214. 5/8/14 - Increased email exploits following Zero-day

The Department of Information Technology has been recently made aware of a new threat that is being spread via email. This threat looks like an invoice from a company in a PDF format, however the attachment is not actually a PDF document but a batch of code designed to download Malware or virus to your computer. Most commonly, it is associated with downloading the Cryptolocker Ransomware. The IT department works diligently to make sure our spam and virus filter are up to date and these emails are blocked as soon as we are made aware of them. However, we would like to remind the community that if you see a message that is from a source that you are unfamiliar with, or get an invoice from a company that you did not order anything from, please do not open the email or the attachments and simply delete the email. Please find information on this threat and on CryptoLocker in the links below:
